Surge Protection
A whole-home surge protective device is installed at the panel, where power enters the house. It diverts excess voltage to ground before it travels through your branch circuits.
The reason this matters more than a power strip is simple: a strip only protects what is plugged into it. Your air conditioning, water heater, oven, pool pump, well pump and anything hardwired have no plug and therefore no protection. Those are usually the most expensive items in the house to replace, and they are exactly what a panel-level device covers.
Two honest caveats. First, surge protection is not lightning protection — a direct strike on the structure is a different problem, and no SPD is claimed to survive that. What these devices handle is the far more common case: nearby strikes, utility switching and grid fluctuations. Second, they have a finite life. Every surge absorbed uses some capacity, so the indicator light needs occasional checking and devices eventually need replacing.
